WARSAW, POLAND. “Stand in solidarity for peace – time to act.” Such is the motto guiding the 13th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, taking place in Warsaw from October 21-23, 2013. Held in Central and Eastern Europe for the first time, this year’s Summit coincides with the 30-year anniversary of former President of Poland Lech Wałęsa’s being awarded the Nobel Prize for his commitment to the peaceful resolution of the problems faced by contemporary Poland.
More than six thousand participants have travelled the globe to debate key global issues. Among the Nobel Prize Winners attending are His Holiness Dalai Lama XIV, former President of South Africa Frederik Willem de Klerk, Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi, Irish peace activists Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan, and Muhammad Yunus, originator of the concept of microcredit. Discussions will also be joined representatives of Nobel Peace Prize winning organizations, including the Permanent International Peace Bureau, Amnesty International, Pugwash Conferences, American Friends for Service Committee, Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, the United Nations and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
