How to Keep Your Hair Glossy
Courtney is a senior at Indiana University majoring in journalism…
Many of us have probably dealt with dry, damaged hair, especially during the colder months. There are plenty of “tricks” that have been used throughout the years, but which ones actually make a difference? I’ve done plenty of experiments on my hair to find out what actually work. Check out my tips below to keep your hair healthy and glossy all year around!
Rinse with cold water
To keep your hair conditioned and glossy, it’s best to finish off your hair-washing routine by rinsing with cool water. Rinsing with cold water will close the hair cuticles and pores on your scalp which seals in the moisturize. This also helps prevent frizz and and increases the shine of your hair.
Use a hair oil
An easy way to restore glossiness to your hair is by using an oil. You can opt to use a hair oil as a weekly treatment (massage into scalp and hair strands) or you can use an oil daily to enhance the shine (just smooth a few drops on your strands). Check out this article by Cosmopolitan to find out what oil might be best for you!
Minimize styling with heat
Using tools such as straighteners, blow dryers and curling irons frequently can do a lot of damage to your hair. Heat damage can lead to frizzy, dry and broken hair. If this sounds like a daunting task, try making small changes. For example, start by letting your hair air-dry one day per week, then increase it from there until you feel confident in your natural hair!
Watch your diet
Some nutrients from the food you eat have also been known to improve hair’s health, especially omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These help improve your hair from the inside out. Fish tend to have high levels of omega, but if you aren’t a fan of seafood, fish oil capsules are perfect too! Other foods with high levels of omega include avocado, walnuts and tofu.
Get glossy hair while you sleep
If you live in environment that is very cold or dry, then it might take some extra work to keep your hair glossy. You don’t have to spend all your free time worrying about your hair though, just take care of it while you sleep. Add a few drops of lavender or mint oil to a humidifier and keep it on while you sleep. This will help with dry and frizzy hair, plus it makes your hair smell great!
